Keeping in touch for the greater good

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

My cell phone plan is up and I’m looking for a change so I’ve been shopping around the different cellular phone companies. I prefer to go by word-of-mouth but it seems like everyone has very different opinions about each cell phone provider. I’m left to my own devices but I just got word that this company joined EarthMoment.com, they’re called CREDO Mobile. To my surprise, I learned they are a cell phone provider. Keeping in touch with your friends and family can also keep you in tune with the environment, justice, equality and politics. CREDO Mobile works in a very similar way that EarthMoment does, with every call you make 1% of your charges automatically go to groups like Planned Parenthood, Rainforest Action Network, Human Rights Watch, The ACLU, Organic Farming Research Foundation, GreenPeace, FairVote, Amnesty International and more - at no cost to you. So once again just by doing what you do you’re giving back. Thus far, CREDO Mobile has donated $56 million to progressive nonprofits. CREDO Mobile explains their mission best; “turning ordinary action into extraordinary change.”

TiVO may not be your Friend

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Don’t you just love pushing the little rewind button on your DVR or TiVO remote after someone says “what’d they just say?” while watching a television show? Well it’s not as great as we’d like to think it is. You’re actually using some of the highest amounts of energy out of any TV accessory when you have a DVR or TiVO. Oh and you’re wasting a bunch of money on your energy bill each year for that too. Yes I love those oh-s0-handy DVRs too but let’s play a little comparison game here; the average annual energy use a DVD player uses is 13 kilowatt hours while a DVR/TiVO uses 363 kilowatt hours. And here’s the part that will really get ya; that evens out to an annual cost of about $1.42 for the DVD player and $39.71 for the DVR/TiVO. But here’s one cool electronic that actually uses less energy and costs less than it’s alternative; a laptop is wise choice for your computer needs. A desktop uses 255 kilowatt hours while a laptop uses only 83, and the annual cost of desktop is $27.90 while a laptop is only $9.08.

Eat me organically!

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

So you want to go organic but can’t afford to go all the way? Well here’s a list of the foods that you are the most important to buy organic (because of their non-organic alternatives that have such high levels of pesticides, chemicals, hormones, additives and all that fun stuff!).

Meat – high usage of hormones to speed growth and antibiotics and pesticides.

Milk – because of pesticides and chemicals

Fruits – these fruits; apples, peaches, strawberries, grapes and tomatoes have delicate skin that pesticides can seep through.

Vegetables – these vegetables; celery, sweet bell peppers and lettuce have thin to no protective skin and rate as some of the highest contaminated food products. Also potatoes not only are high for pesticides but also for fungicides that added to the soil.
