Self Competition

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Challenge yourself this October and join the Eat Local Challenge.  For 30 days straight, (yes I know there are 31 days in October but the challenge only specifies 30 days) commit to eating only locally grown foods. The challenge declares “local” food as traditionally a 150-mile distance from your home but it says you can decide for yourself if you want to change the distance to food grown in your county, state or region.  Even if you already make an effort to support locally grown food don’t look past this idea, it’s still a challenge to eat only locally grown food for an entire month straight.  Testing yourself is the best kind of competition, either way your always happy for the winner right?

The British have done it again; they’ve added their great sense of style and dapper charm to the cycling population. Always the trendsetters, some fashionably eco-conscious London-ites have a new site called Cycle Chic.  Dedicated to those stylish little ladys who bike to work, bike to class, bike to meet friends, pretty much just bike wherever they can and want to keep their effortless style.  For great tips on what’s new in fashion and what, out of those trends, works best on your bike or the awesome little gadgets you’ll love to add on the bike, or bike safety and how to buy the bike for you then read Cycle Chic.

No one is too cool for school

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

It takes a lot of green to get that college degree — not the kind of green that grows on trees.  But how green in the eco way is your school?  You can see where your current college, alma mater or future educational powerhouse ranks among others in the latest Princeton Review.  They were ranked by their efforts in energy efficiency, food options and environmentally based course offerings.  Many universities are now jockeying to reach Green Honor Roll, see who made the cut.

The Conscientious Midwest

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Midwestern charm and green initiatives make this small Missouri town more than special.  Being from the Midwest I’m proud to say that even a small landlocked town knows how to group together and make an effort to combat global warming.  The 1,300 residents of Rockport, MO are surprised themselves that they are the first community in the United States to be powered completely by wind.  Four turbines are right outside the city and generate more electricity than the town even uses!  So hah, to all those who seem to think the Midwesterns live some antiquated lifestyle!
